Assignment 1-3 my thoughts

Analyze the Antique Roadshow
The article I have chosen is titled Narratives of Value and the Antiques
Road Show: ‘‘A Game of Recognitions,’’ written by Abby Clouse. The article is a detailed summary of the values which we place on objects. Also this article describes how people base the value of something in terms of historical or emotional value. The arthour of this article has written it for a general audience, or for anyone who would place value to an object, so in realistic terms this would mean everyone. This is also evident by reading the stories and knowing that the author is trying to describe how we as an audience learn from the objects and stories brought on each episode of the show. The article details different shows where guests of Antiques Road Show has brought their items into the appraisers areas just to hear what the value of their object is. Mrs Clouse uses concepts and theories to explain her thoughts of what value really means to someone. Such concepts and theories are seen throughout this article when we are introduced to a new object and the feelings expressed by the appraiser and the guest are revealed. Many times, the owner of the object was hoping for a value of their object to be greater than it was.
If I were to summarize this article I would start by saying that trying to place value to an object is very hard to do. You first must analyze your object and decide what it means to you, whether it is Market value, historical value, sentimental value, artistic value or an entertainment value. Deciding what type of value you are looking for greatly changes how you react to finding out how much something is really worth. Often times people say that something has a sentimental value until they hear what the market value is. This often changes the type of emotion you may have for a certain object. Money is an evil thing, and can turn the most sentimental object into just something worth value. The article I read describes scene from the show in which the appraiser tells the owner how much the object is worth and just by their expression you can tell they were interested in the selling value of their object. Also Antiques Road Show is the type of show that you can actually learn about history or a certain part of culture, just by listening to the stories told on the show.
Often times people bring items on the show that may not be worth much, except the fact that there is proof of where the artifacts came from or what part of time they are from. For example a gentleman brought several boxes of bullets on the show, and normally these bullets would appraise for approximately a dollar per bullet, but since the man had each bullet labeled and dated back to the Civil War they appraised at approximately two thousand dollars worth of bullets. Just by being able to account for something helps to bring more value to an object. This example shows us how we learned a little bit about history and what certain eras of time mean to the value of an object. Probably the most important aspect of this article is reading and understanding that placing a value on an object should not change what type of value you place on it. What I mean by this is if you have a sentimental value to something, don’t let money change how you feel about it. The Antique Road Show is a wonderful show to watch and see how people judge a they possessions.
As you read through this article you can easily flow from paragraph to paragraph, and can easily depict the main points and ideas the author is describing. This made the article enjoyable to read and easy to understand. Each new thought or example expressed in the story was introduced in a manner that made sense and followed the authors pattern of events. Each important idea or main point was clearly stated by either indenting the example or quoting what was said by the appraiser and the objects owner. From there a brief thought was given from the authors point of view. This also made the article very readable and understandable.
Finally the most important aspect of my article is that placing value to an object means more to one person than to another. This was clearly evident throughout the artilce by reading about reactions to what the value of something was. It is very important to know what you have and how much it is worth. The problem with this is often it may lead to a false sense of what you really posses. Often times placing value to something ultimately ruins the sentimental value of what you really posses. In today’s society money is the route of all evil, and may eventually cause you to do something you may regret in the future.
